What is chemical conversion coating used for?
Conversion coatings on aluminium housings, shields and brackets give corrosion resistance and a paint or bonding base without a dimensional plate build. SM Finishes applies chemical conversion for aerospace and electronics hardware from Bengaluru. When the drawing calls it, treat MIL C 5541-type requirements as the customer spec we process to — class, colour and electrical-contact faces must be on the print.
Some connector faces must remain conductive; others may be painted. Export programmes to Japan and Taiwan should state whether RoHS-acceptable chemistries are mandatory. Lead time is quoted from class, masking and whether contacts on the same assembly need gold or tin.
Why Our Chemical Conversion Stands Out
We combine technical expertise with stringent process control to ensure consistent, high-quality finishes that meet both functional and aesthetic needs.
- Optimized Corrosion
- Paint & Adhesive Bonding
- Non-Reflective, Low-Glare Finishes
- Dimensional Stability
- MIL, ASTM, and ISO Standards
- Versatile Applications
Our process is tailored for industries where performance, reliability, and compliance are critical — from defense and aerospace to electronics and precision engineering. Every project is executed with a focus on quality, durability, and exact specification matching.
Precision & Craftsmanship
Every chemical conversion coating we deliver reflects our dedication to detail and technical accuracy. From meticulous surface preparation to controlled chemical baths, we ensure each component receives a consistent, defect-free finish that meets the exact performance and compliance standards required by your industry
Applications
Ideal for protecting aluminum, magnesium, and other metals in aerospace, automotive, defense, and industrial equipment where longevity and surface integrity are essential.
Conversion coating process
Aluminium is cleaned, converted, rinsed and packed to protect the film. Class and colour (clear/gold appearance) are drawing callouts, not cosmetic preferences we choose. Electrical-bond surfaces that must stay conductive have to be masked or specified as such. ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100:2015 cover process control.
This is not passivation of stainless and not a nickel plate. Thickness build is not a gold-style micrometre callout; corrosion performance and paint adhesion are the usual acceptance criteria on the spec.
Applications on hybrid connector hardware
Aluminium shells, shields, brackets and aerospace electronics housings around hybrid connectors. Contacts in the same assembly may still need gold or tin. Quote the full assembly so masking and racking are planned once.
Defence and aerospace buyers often write MIL C 5541-type classes. Automotive electronics may add paint or powder over conversion. Send the stack with the RFQ.
How conversion sits with plating
Sequence conversion, passivation and plating so one bath does not attack the other metal. Stainless hardware on the same connector uses passivation, not conversion. Complex aluminium geometry that also needs wear may use electroless nickel on selected parts — that is a different spec.
